Springtime. The birds are chirping, the buds are blossoming, and at long last the dreary New england winter ends. With this transition comes Spring for The Arts; a day in which artists of all ages within the Scituate public school system get to present their work. Spring is fitting for such an occasion; hot dogs and hamburgers are being grilled, and the High Schools choirs and bands, lead by the distinctly bald Mr. Richter and Mrs. Tucker can be heard either outside or in auditorium, depending on the weather, creating a feeling of care-free exuberance that can only truly be felt during the sunnier seasons.
While it is a celebration of the new coming season, Spring for the Arts is more importantly a chance for students creating art and music in Scituate to show their work, and gain acknowledgement they might otherwise lack. By its nature art and music can’t be showcased as often as sports, which often have games atleast once a week. Senior student Tyler Lewis says “It allows artists to express themselves to their own community and it gives them a place to do so where everyone is appreciative of their efforts”. And that’s exactly what Spring for the Arts does; brings out an artistically geared community that might otherwise be hindered. Senior member of select choir Olivia Branton says “art and music are an integral part of human life, and paired with the changing seasons it makes for a great celebration of human expression”.
What’s great about Spring for the Arts is the artwork spans from kindergarteners who have only recently begun to dabble in art, to the older more serious artists and musicians who have plans to attend art or music school. It’s a place to appreciate as well as to encourage; the younger artists can feel the gratification of acknowledgement for their work which may encourage them to keep at it and develop their craft.
So come out May 15th, eat burger or dog, and appreciate the art and music that the Scituate community have to offer.
