Sequels to beloved movies seem to be the new trend of 2013. New installments of well-known movies soon to be hitting the big screen include Despicable Me 2, Grown Ups 2, Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, Paranormal Activity 5, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, Catching Fire, and Hangover Part III.. Audiences are anxiously awaiting the releases of these upcoming films.
With so many of these additions coming out, it’s hard to say which ones will exceed expectations and which series should have just stuck with the original. It’s sometimes rare that a sequel or even “triquel” surpasses the original but one thing’s for sure, audiences and fans are eager to see just what happened after Ron Burgundy and Veronica Corningstone escaped the bear pen, Katniss and Peeta were crowned the winners of the 74th annual Hunger Games, and the Wolfpack ventured off on another crazy unplanned night.
One of the most anticipated sequels soon to be released is Anchorman: The Legend Continues. There are new additions to the cast such as the famous actress and comedian Kristen Wiig, who will do nothing but improve the movie’s hysterical original cast, as they return to continue the legend of San Diego’s infamous news anchor Ron Burgundy. The trailers for the second installment have ensured audiences that the story continues with the same unforgettable humour it started with.
Junior, Ethan Dunlap is one of many who can’t wait for the movie to come out. Dunlap said, “I’ll be there opening day. The first Anchorman is one of the most memorable, strangest, and quotable comedies of that decade, and based on everything that’s been released, the sequel is looking to be just as madcap and bizarre.”
Another anticipated film of the coming year is Catching Fire, the sequel to the renowned Hunger Games, which proved to be one of the most loved movies of 2012. The film, based off the famous novel by Suzanne Collins, follows Peeta and Katniss as they go on their “Victor’s Tour” of Panem after returning as the winners of the 74th annual Hunger Games. The Capitol is quick to destroy the image of hope that Katniss presents to District 12 and this is sure to cause complete chaos within the city of Panem. The film is being released in November of 2013 so audiences will have to wait quite a while until they watch the rest of Peeta and Katniss’ story unfold but this anticipation is sure to bring nothing but rushes of crowds to the box offices.
The Wolfpack is back for round three in the soon to be released triquel of the beloved and hilarious Hangover series. The boys return to Vegas but this time there is no bachelor party or no wedding, just simply a boys vacation to Sin City. With what seems to be close to the same plot as the previous two Hangover’s it’s unsure what the audiences reaction will be to Part III.
Junior Joe Lynch said, “I think that they are forcing a third movie. I don’t think this one will be as good because it keeps repeating the same plot.” The unplanned forgettable nights the Wolfpack encounter might be getting too familiar but audiences will have to be the judge of that when the movie comes out May 24th.
With such successful originals, it’ll be interesting to see which sequels make audiences just as excited.
