You’ve probably seen Scott in one of your classes, pencil or pen in hand as he sketches out a drawing. Perhaps you’ve had him in a few of your classes or maybe just know him from swim team, or he’s been your cashier when you had to get some groceries at Stop & Shop. But one of the rising stars in Scituate High School’s artistic community is senior Scott Crowley. For Scott, art is not only a hobby to help pass the time; it is a means of self-expression and a way for Scott to
As an artist at SHS, Scott has been taking art classes for two years but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been doing art longer. Scott says, “[I’ve] been doing art since I was born”. Scott often creates two dimensional drawings with pencil as well as using Adobe Photoshop from time to time. However, instead of using Photoshop to edit photos, Scott uses the program to create shapes and colors for his drawings that would be very difficult to do only by hand. When it comes to his 2-D drawings, Scott typically draws people, making his own unique personas or recreating characters that he sees from video games such as Dishonored. To Scott, characters are more interesting than just creating a random environment or a pretty background. As Scott says, “I believe that the characters make the environment, not the background,”. This interesting philosophy is what inspires most, if not all of Scott’s artistic works. One of his favorite characters to draw is Prince Arthas Menethil, also known as the Lich King to people who play the online computer game, World of Warcraft.
Besides using art just to create new characters and that he sees on a daily basis, Scott uses art as a medium to express himself. As he puts it, “Drawing is a form of expression unique to the artist… What I think art is is the artist’s expression, not the viewer’s [interpretation]”. Although some artists tend to reveal their ideology or promote certain things with their art, Scott tends to just focuses on the art making art just for the sake of art most of the time. But recently Scott discovered that his artwork actually does reveal some things certain philosophies and ideas. “Basically I found that my art conveys the fear of death in a positive light as well as that power will corrupt [a person]”. Scott’s art does not only impress his classmates but his teachers as well. One of his fans is Mr. Nisbet. Mr. Nisbet likes Scott’s art because not only does it have good detail but because of Scott’s hard work ethic as he draws. “He thinks about his work” says Mr. Nesbit. In Mr. Nesbit’s opinion, Scott is very creative and always has a plan before starting his art projects. Mr. Nesbit also says, “It’s interesting to think about what’s going on in his head” when referring to seeing what Scott will make next. Mrs. Hendrickson is also very impressed with Scott’s work saying, “His stuff is really amazing. He is quite the draftsman”.
One of Scott’s primary influences comes from video games. In fact, Scott’s plan after SHS is to attend Landmark College in Vermont. After a year or so of attending Landmark, he plans to transfer to Champlain College and major in game development. For Scott, his dream job is to be a game developer, people who create video games. Combining both his artistic talents and his love of videogames, he feels that the job is very well suited towards him. Whether he will make models for new characters, texture them on a computer, draw concept art, or even animate them to help move his creations from 2D to 3D, being a game developer is Scott’s goal. Perhaps one day one of his original characters will be as famous as Nintendo’s Mario and Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog.
