After years of anticipation, the time is finally here for the event boys and girls alike have been envisioning. Although it’s an occasion filled with good times and dancing with friends, a lack of preparation can leave people stressed out until the last dance.
There are many things you should do to prepare for the big night:
Tip #1: Before even considering what type of tux or dress you want, make sure to cover the basics. Having a parent attend the prom meeting and getting your 35 hours of community service into guidance is mandatory before buying tickets, which go on sale April 9th – 11th.
Tip #2: Schedule ahead! Girls, appointments go quickly and with little time after school you should definitely try to plan in advance. Whether for tanning or hair and makeup, make sure to consider time constraints – especially with how long it takes to get to some of the salons. Boys, don’t forget to get your tux with plenty of time. There are two parts, fitting and ordering, so make sure you have those scheduled well in advance.
Tip #3: Once you know who your date is, start making arrangements. Knowing where your pictures will be, where you’re sitting, your rides to and from the high school, and any post-prom plans will leave you with less stress.
Tip #4: DON’T FORGET THE FLOWERS! Corsages for girls, boutonnieres for boys. Remember to order these about a week in advance… they run out quickly, and can be purchased from any of the local flower shops.
Tip #5: This one is for the girls. Make sure to try on a dress multiple times to ensure you love it and to double check to see if it needs adjustments. If it needs to be taken in or hemmed, do it early so you can ensure the final product is just the way you want it. Also, don’t stress over buying expensive shoes because by the end everyone takes them off. In terms of dress shopping, everyone has a different opinion. Junior Alicia Hébert says, “prom is exciting but finding a dress and all that is going to be stressful.”
Tip #6: To bring a clutch or not bring a clutch, that is the question. In Lizzy’s opinion, it is a smart option because you don’t have to worry about someone grabbing your phone, and you have a place for gum and money. In Claire’s opinion, a clutch is not necessary. Your phone is all you need! The bathroom is filled with everything a girl could possibly need, from deodorant to hairspray (props to Ms. Bernard). Putting your phone in your date’s jacket pocket is the way to go, and there is no need for money.
Tip #7: Don’t worry about where you’re sitting for dinner; getting upset with friends isn’t worth it. In all honesty, it isn’t long enough to stress over and in the end people are too in the moment to actually care. Just think of it as prep for weddings when you definitely won’t know who you’re sitting with! Seniors Grady Comeau and Johnny Ralston make a point to say “don’t worry; you’ll have fun no matter what.”
Tip #8: Whether you’re a boy or girl, borrowing as many things for prom as possible is the smart thing to do. The expenses add up fast, so whether its jewelry or a tux you’ll be happy you asked.
The day is almost here, and it’s something you’ve been waiting for since you could remember. Don’t let yourself get hung up on the little things, because in the end those make the night even more memorable. Planning ahead will help things go smoothly, and following our tips are sure to help you get there. When in doubt, avoid stress and your night won’t be a mess!
