If it is not evident, or you live under a rock, the prom panic is setting in at SHS. Chaos over dates, dresses, and tables is sweeping the halls of the junior class and taking over. However, one overlooked aspect of the junior prom past the dates and dresses would be the actions on the dance floor. We are all awaiting the awkward question of when to move to the dance floor from your table. Once the dancers make the shift, the dilemma is whether to play it safe or let loose.
Our last real dances were not a high school homecoming, but semiformal last year, or even more memorable Gates dances, most of the junior class is not used to a normal dance atmosphere.
“I think that Gates dances have kind of blurred our vision of what prom could be.” Said junior Kyle Rodrigues “It used to be the stereotypical girls on one side boys on the other and then when “I Will Always Love You” started playing everyone made awkward eye contact to find someone to dance with.”
Hopefully the dj will not take us back to middle school with Whitney Houston’s famous tune, but just in case, at least you will have a date. If not, you will be presented with a selection of other songs, so, practice your favorite rage moves for the fast songs.
“My favorite would have to be the Bernie” said junior Brittany Doherty. “You just hang back and swing your arms around all loose, it’s easy and no one knows what you’re doing.”
With these fast songs, comes the question of how to move to the beat. Another classic dance move to throw on the dance floor could be the dougie.
“Not that most Scituate kids have mastered this move, but just brush your hair around or something” said Doherty.
Despite Scituate’s clear inability to dance, you can always throw in a fist pump or two, its sure to impress your friends and maybe even your date.
No matter what your moves are for this prom season, just let loose, and make up your own dance moves, or stick to the basics, whatever works for you.
“We’ve all known each other for a while now and hopefully the dancing won’t be as awkward” said Rodrigues.
Prom has been an American tradition for year, and the dancing will always be memorable. Try not to be uptight about how you look on the dance floor, most people won’t be, the more uptight you are the more you will stick out like a sore thumb.
