Do you need something to do this summer? Are your parents bugging you that you have too much time on your hands? Are you constantly told you need to think about others more than yourself?
Your problems end here. There are plenty of great community service opportunities around Scituate. You could volunteer with the Scituate Recreation Department, you could tutor a younger student and help them with
summer work, the Scituate Animal Shelter, or you could simply do random jobs for others around you.

Everyone is different and everyone participates in different activities. Therefore, it is wise to volunteer somewhere that makes you feel comfortable.
“I found something I liked which was helping out at different basketball clinics. I believe that if you do something that you enjoy, whether it be teaching little kids sports or helping out in drama or even tutoring after school, whatever it might be, if it’s enjoyable to you then it will make the whole experience better,” said senior Paul Svensen.
Volunteering and helping out those around you doesn’t always have to be based on what your friends or what other people around you are doing. It could be something you’ve never done before or it could be something that you like that no one else knows about you. What you decide to do is completely up to you.
If you are too late to sign up for opportunities in Scituate, don’t fret, there are plenty of opportunities available along the South Shore. I have volunteered at a farm in Hingham called Weir River Farm and it combined with another camp that was held at World’s End. I spent two summers doing a camp at Weir River and World’s End, and I really enjoyed working with all of the little kids.
“In Cohasset I have volunteered at the south shore art center and filmed for them. And yes I enjoyed it
because I love to film,” said junior Alicia Hébert.
The largest community service opportunity in Scituate every year is the Appalachian Service Project trip. The ASP trip is put together and planned throughout the school year and sends a group of kids and adults to a place that is in desperate need of repair in the summer. For the 2013 trip, the ASP group is going to West Virginia and leaves on July 6th and returns on July 14th. ASP is the most popular community service opportunity in Scituate because so many people sign up to go and end up loving what they do and go the following year.
Doing community service isn’t just about getting those 50 hours done by senior year in order to graduate, it’s about helping those around you and having fun doing it. So, whether you are tutoring, working for the Scituate Recreation Department, or helping an art center film a video, it will be a good thing to get out there and volunteer in any way that you can.
