Rainy summer days may mean the beach is off limits, but that doesn’t mean the fun is. This summer gather your friends together for some rainy day activities that will break the rainy day blues, but not the bank.
One idea worth trying is having a movie marathon. Get together with your friends and watch movies from your favorite series. See how many you can watch within the series (extra credit to anyone with enough determination to watch all eight Harry Potter movies)! Another out of the ordinary idea would be to mute the movie, and create your own lines: give your favorite classics an amusing twist.
Another more active option is to take a walk or run in the rain. Make a great workout playlist and break out of your typical workout routine. Freshman Casey Kelleher said “running in the rain is really refreshing, and you feel like you’re on a mission”.
If you feel your savage roots coming out, have a big game of manhunt in the rain. The hazy weather provides the ideal setting for a game of manhunt, and it’ll be hard not to feel like a character from The Hunger Games.
For those who are motivated enough to leave the comforts of home, and enter out into public domain, head out to a local restaurant, and take turns ordering the strangest things on the menu. For example be brave and try the calamari at TK’s. Trying something new will be a thrilling way to stimulate your taste buds, especially at a restaurant you’ve been to at least a million times.
For a lazy day at home alone, spend the day crossing things off of your to-do list. Look up a new band that you’ve been eager to listen to. There is no better weather for music discovery than a rainy day. Pick up that book that you’ve always wanted to read, but have never had time to start. Another valid and more realistic option is to spend the day in your pajamas watching Netflix. Either way you are sure to have a relaxing day in.
Instead of repining that DIY idea on Pinterest, try it in real life. Search for do it yourself projects that you have the materials for, and tackle it. Try making a quilt out of old tee shirts. This will channel your focus towards an exciting end result, and is sure to be a good time in the process. By the end you will have a new homemade product and the creativity will practically be oozing out of you.
A fresher take on the typical rainy day would be to teach yourself a new skill. Search YouTube for tutorials on unique and creative activities. Teach yourself how to juggle, play a new song on the guitar, or solve a rubix cube. The hours will pass rapidly, and you’ll have a cool new skill to flaunt to all your friends.
If you’re up for a bit of an adventure, take the T or drive in to the Museum of Science, the Aquarium or the Museum of Fine Arts. An intellectual day filled with exploring one of Boston’s highly reputable museums may be just what you need to break out of your typical summer routine. The Scituate Public Library offers passes as well as discounts to many Boston attractions, so it would be worth calling to book the passes, and save some cash.
Sophomore Jenna Brooks said, “Boston is a great place to go on a rainy day because of its wonderful indoor activities that are both educational and enjoyable”.
Rainy days during the summer don’t have to be as boring with these exciting new activities, or you could always just do that summer work that’s been sitting in a pile since the last day of school.
