After a school year that lasted a little longer then we all imagined, summer 2013 is finally here. As we waited for summer to arrive, we all had ideas of the “perfect summer”, and the many adventures that we will partake in. As dreams turn into reality, we realize our days seem to be a little…boring. So with that, here are some activities to spice up the summer.
For those who are hoping to stay active this summer, a day trip to Boston will bring new experiences to stay fit. In South Boston, the South Boston Yoga Studio offers anti-gravity yoga. Anti-gravity yoga combines hammocks along with acrobatic movements, pilates, and dance to give the body a complete workout. This type of yoga is specifically designed for athletes, although available to the everyday person as well; and it’s only $15 for a class.Keep in mind, this type of yoga is pretty advanced, so taking some beginner classes before is highly recommended.
Another activity is pottery. Yes, I bet we all went to a pottery making birthday party when we were younger, although this activity is still enjoyable for all ages! The Pottery Place in Hanover, MA offers inexpensive options to design a decorative piece for a friend, family member, or even yourself. Pottery ranges from $4.00-$80.00 so finding the perfect piece is easy. Get some friends together and head over for a night of laughs and creativity.
If you’re looking for a fun trip to beat the heat, heading to a water-park is always an exciting outing. CoCo Key Boston in the North Shore is an indoor water-park that includes a wide variety of slides, playgrounds, and lazy rivers to enjoy. An indoor waterpark is the perfect place during stormy days or heat waves to have a good time rather than staying home all day. To make the trip even better, stay the weekend. CoCo Key Boston has an attached hotel with free wifi, tv’s, and is even pet-friendly. A full-day pass costs $45, and the drive is only a little over an hour away.
For those who aren’t looking to spend a lot of money, a great option is a Bucket List Day. Schedule a day with a group of friends and set out to accomplish as many bucket list items as you can, It can include smashing a pie in someone’s face, riding in a hot air balloon, stargazing, zip-lining, or conquering your biggest fear. After participating in a bucket list night, rising senior Meghan James said it was “a creative way to bond with my friends and create memories. Instead of just ‘hanging out’, it gave a little twist on what you can do together and it can be really, really fun.”
To stay local, the small town of Scituate has lots to offer. Beach days are always pleasant with the cool sea breeze, and beautiful scenery. Bring some lunch and stay awhile at Peggotty beach, Egypt beach, Minot beach, or even Humarock beach. A new game that has risen in popularity is Kanjam. This frisbee toss games includes coordination skills with friendly competition to create the ideal game to bring anywhere. The game is fairly simple; to get the frisbee in the “can” to receive the maximum amount of points. Rising senior Olivia Neagle loves to play Kanjam because “you can play even if you are awful at frisbee and it’s the perfect summer game to bring your friends together. Plus, you can play it on the beach, or in the backyard; it’s so versatile.”
All in all, a shortened summer means that each day is precious. Summer is the perfect time to try something new, and create memories that will last a lifetime. And what’s better than doing it with your best friends!
