A “phone cubby” hangs sparsely populated in Mrs. Hall’s classroom.

The new cell phone policy, the headlining initiative for the starting school year, has emerged as one of the most controversial issues at Scituate High School. Hearing conflicting opinions on the policy as well as the inherent dangers associated with the phone racks, the video team set out to get the opinions of the school community on the policy.

Through a series of interviews with staff and students throughout the school, the video team was getting nowhere. Predictable responses led to no new answers. Teachers praised the policy while students felt they were being taken advantage of. The video team talked to the administration with the goal of investigating liability issues with the phone racks and their intentions in implementing them, but with such cookie-cutter responses from both the staff and a portion of the student body, The Scituation was forced to get an outsider’s opinion on the phone policy.

There needed to be at least one person who had something new to add to the conversation. That somebody was Mr. John “Mink Rockmoore” Roser. Mr. Roser runs Scituate Community Television, whose headquarters is located in the heart of SHS. Mr. Roser believes that when something is taken away, another activity should be provided. He thinks this is applicable in the case of the phone policy as it applies to study halls. He believes that the administration should give out tablets to students during studies or give another activity if they don’t have their phones.
