To Space Camp and Beyond!
January 10, 2018
While the rest of SHS was adjusting to the new school year, junior Sam Borek was participating in the collaborative and intensive week-long camp – SCIVIS, Space Camp For Interested Visually Impaired Students. At the camp, Sam experienced first-hand what it’s like to be in a field of aviation and military by participating in F18 simulators and other rigorous activities that mimicked actual space experiences. He also completed many adventure activities like climbing a fifty-foot pole while being belayed by his fellow campers. Borek also enjoyed going on a fifty-foot zip line, which challenged both his mental and physical capacities.
Paired with adventure activities, team building exercises were prevalent throughout the camp and focused on water survival lessons, helicopter crash simulations, as well as how to build a fire. After a day of intensive activity, the campers would partake in night labs and patrols–the exercises never stopped. Besides flying F18 flight simulators, Borek’s favorite moments of the camp included exercises that produced comradery and unique relationships with fellow campers from all over the world. Borek is already looking forward to what next year’s camp offers!
