Though the Scituation usually focuses on students and events at the high school, we recently ventured over to Gates Middle School to seek out new ideas for stories. While there, we had the opportunity to sit down and interview Brigid Coleman and Stephen Fassnacht, two students in the Gates Learning Community. We had so much fun talking to them and learning more about their long-lasting friendship.

Brigid, age 13, and Stephen, age 12, have been best friends since their time at Hatherly Elementary School. They have always loved hanging out with each other, both in and out of school. From learning together in the classroom, playing basketball in the Gates gym, and having dance parties at the end of the school day, there is never a dull moment between these two friends.

On a typical school day, you can find Brigid and Stephen “arguing” over anything–including who can run faster during the Special Olympics 100-meter dash. “Stephen, you’re a crazy kid,” Brigid repeated several times throughout the interview. Clearly, these two students know everything about each other. Ask them anything, and they both can answer with the name of each other’s pets, favorite ice cream flavor, or a favorite donut. (Stephen likes glazed sticks, and Brigid prefers Boston cream.)

Going out to eat is another enjoyable activity for these long-time friends. Currently, TK´s tops the list of best place to eat. Brigid will most likely get her favorite food, pasta, and Stephen will get his choice, grilled cheese. After their meal, they might head over to their favorite ice cream shop, JJ’s in Cohasset.

Brigid and Stephen were also excited to share their favorite things about each other. Stephen told us he likes Brigid’s smile, stating she is a “princess.” Stephen’s smile is also one of the reasons Brigid enjoys spending time together. She said Stephen makes her laugh. They each have their own separate caring, encouraging, and silly personalities that make their friendship work.

Next year, Brigid will be coming to the high school. This is a big step for her education and personal growth. Brigid said she is very excited to see all her new friends in the hallways. In particular, she looks forward to being known as “Brigid #1,” while a certain Scituation writer will be known as “Brigid #2” -;)

Stephen and Brigid’s presence is warm and welcoming. We could have spent all day sitting and talking with them, and we’re glad they count us among their friends. Friendships are a natural part of growing up, but the friendship between Stephen and Brigid is extraordinary. In fact, no one rocks a secret handshake like these two: claps, hip-bumps, and numerous high-fives are all included.
