In September 2023, Scituate High School welcomed their newest addition, English teacher Christina Dimitri. Ms. Dimitri currently teaches four sections of freshmen in addition to one sophomore class. Ms. Dimitri resides locally in her hometown of Marshfield, Massachusetts and she graduated from Boston College after receiving her Master’s Degree. After college, she found employment at SHS and became a crucial part of the community here.
From a young age, Dimitri has always known that she wanted to be a teacher: “When I was in college, I took a literature class that I loved. I was originally going to be a math teacher but I feel like English has something for everyone, and there are a lot of ways that you can tie in your own personal experiences to what you read and do, and I think that’s really special.”
Among other interests, Dimitri is a talented singer and sang in the University Chorale of Boston College. She recently sang the National Anthem at the Red Sox with her former choir. Dimitri is also an Assistant Coach with the SHS Unified Track Team. Throughout the school year, Dimitri can be found at numerous extracurricular activities cheering on her students, whether it is from the audience or the sidelines. She has attended The Miracle Worker and, as a student who participated in drama at Marshfield High School, understands the time and energy commitment of her student actors. She has attended sporting events from Winter basketball to Spring Track and Field. Dimitri has prioritized taking an interest in student’s lives outside of school, proving her dedication to her students not only as an educator but also as a supportive faculty member.
Being a Marshfield Native, Dimitri has found it ultimately very rewarding to be able to teach close to where she grew up. “[I love the atmosphere] of the community, the values, the priorities, etcetera, but I also don’t feel like I’m in a place where everyone knows me already and knows [what] I was involved in in high school.”
So far in her new position, Dimitri has had an incredible experience saying, “I don’t think it could be much better. There’s so much to be involved in, and people go to each other’s events and sports and plays and, there’s just so much good energy here that I feel like it’s been great so far.”
One of Dimitri’s core values as an educator is ensuring that her students feel welcomed and included. During an interview, Dimitri said, “If you don’t feel safe in my space, if you don’t feel like I care about you as a person, why would you care about your classwork? You’re certainly not going to be interpreting a simile.”
Dimitri has made a significant impact on anyone who has had the privilege to work with her. We can look forward to seeing her for many years to come, whether that is as a friendly face students see in the halls, at a sporting event, or teaching what she is passionate about.
