Of all the changes Scituate High School has seen over the past couple of years, one of the biggest has been the addition of the new principal, Mr. Wargo. Wargo became principal September of 2012, and is ready to continue his career at SHS.
What Wargo has seen at his first year at SHS has exceeded his expectations. “The teachers are very dedicated to learning” he said, “Everything is for the kids.” He also mentioned that kids are kids, no matter which school they attend, however, it’s what SHS has to offer that sets its students apart from the other schools where Wargo has been.
Wargo found that the connection that the students share with not only the school but the community is extremely strong. He loves how much of the student body is willing to take time out of their days, both before and after classes, for the school. He particularly enjoys the music that students perform weekly on the stoop, and the crowd that shows up; something that is unique to SHS.
Although Scituate is known for it’s amazing athletes and artists, academics is on the top of Wargo’s list. He has said it before and he will continue to say it; his mission for SHS is “academic success for all students.” Learning is the reason why the students come to school, hence, why academics mean so much to Wargo. He is very impressed with the attendance rate that Scituate has, and believes it is directly correlated with the notable academic accomplishments.
Plans for next year are still up in the air, and nothing is official yet, but don’t expect any drastic changes for SHS. After being here for a year, Wargo has been able to get a good feel for the school. He feels like he has “adopted the school” this year, and can finally claim ownership over the years to come, but in the long run he makes it clear that this is the student’s building and he wants them to be excited to come to school each day.
If you’re ever in the office, Wargo’s door is always open. He really wants to be able to hear from any student that has an opinion. “Without knowing anything, there’s not much that can be done” added Wargo. Establishing relationships is part of the learning process, and Wargo is ready to create a bond with all members of the Scituate High School community.
