Courtyard Freedom
May 15, 2016
With all the construction going on, students and faculty are looking for new ways to utilize every part of the building that still exists. Administration was excited when Scituate High School juniors Maeve Glancy and Katie Ellis presented them with the idea of opening up the courtyard. Principal Wargo, Glancy, and Ellis, worked together to create some goals for opening up the courtyard. The plan is to make the courtyard available to seniors only during H Block as soon as possible; the goal is to eventually open it up to all students. Administration is hoping more students will be able to utilize a beautiful area that is often forgot about by many; the extra advantage in Wargo’s mind is for students to be able to go outside while still remaining on school grounds.
What many people don’t know is that with the construction of the new auditorium, there will be “green space” between the new building and the present life sciences wing of SHS. The future of this area has not been fully discussed. It could possibly become a new quad, but might be used as a walk-through for a fire exit instead. When asked if the construction played any role with administration being more open-minded to different physical changes in the school, Mr. Wargo stated that he doesn’t believe that it was because of construction, but because “we try to take advantage of the spaces inside of our building.” Wargo is happy to see students and faculty utilizing current areas such as the high-tops. He said that administration always asks what they could do with the vacant spaces that are underutilized or maybe not used at all. The goal in mind is to take advantage of the entire building and make it as staff and student friendly as possible.
Mr. Maguire, one of the high school’s science teachers, has already informed the school that there shouldn’t be any activities that would damage or harm the habitats of the ducks that gladly call SHS home. It has also become known that this area would still be utilized by Mr. Maguire’s classes, if need be, along with the other programs and classes that use that space.
