On Thursday, December 14th, SHS history was made. For the first time–as far as anyone recalls–TWO students from the same graduating class received early acceptance to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Seniors Max Allen and Matthew Carolan submitted early decision applications to the Ivy League university this year, which led to intense anticipation throughout the school.
Word started spreading among SHS students and staff about this Ivy League “showdown” in early December after Carolan started a “Days until Cornell Result” countdown on the classroom whiteboard of his former English teacher, Catherine Hall. Students in Hall’s classes grew increasingly connected to the ultimate decision, and no one knew what to expect from the results.
According to Hall, who taught both Allen and Carolan, both students have solid academic credentials and personal attributes. Based on their grades, AP exam results, and extracurricular achievements, Allen and Carolan were strong candidates for the Ivy League. Still, the odds of both being accepted were slim due to Cornell’s competitive acceptance rate of 9%.
Intensifying the acceptance drama even more, Allen and Carolan both participate in the SHS music program, and the Cornell decision was due to be released on the evening of the 14th during this year’s winter music concert. Before the event, Allen and Carolan agreed they would not share their results with anyone until 10:00 p.m.
As planned, Allen and Carolan talked on the phone after the concert, and to their surprise, both were accepted! Screaming with exhilaration, they were eager to share the news with friends, family, and the SHS community.
Today, on Friday, December 15th, the halls of SHS are filled with excitement as students and teachers congratulate the two friends and future Cornellians!
