On Wednesday, April 3rd, from 8:15 to 9:15 AM, the SHS administration hosted the high school’s first AP Breakfast Celebration. Students taking one or more Advanced Placement classes were invited to attend, as were their parents, caregivers, and teachers.
Participants were treated to a continental breakfast of coffee, pastry, bagels, fruit, and yogurt and invited to a celebration in the Performing Arts Center. Principal Marc Loranger congratulated everyone, shared brief remarks, and called students from each AP subject to the stage for a group photo with their teacher.
Before the celebration, all AP students were given an “AP T-shirt,” which they were encouraged to wear during class photos.
During his presentation, Loranger shared information about the AP program at SHS. Currently, 350 students are enrolled in one or more AP classes, increasing from 296 during the 2022-23 school year. Two additional classes, AP Seminar and Comparative Government, are being added during the 2024-25 academic year, so he expects this number to increase. The SHS World Language Department offers an AP course in every language, and last year, AP Spanish students scored above the global average.
Highlighting the efforts of both teachers and students, Loranger explained that SHS was named to the Advanced Placement Program AP School Honor Roll, earning a silver distinction.
To recognize their hard work and dedication, Loranger asked students to stand for applause as he shared the number of AP classes they are taking this year. When Loranger asked if anyone in the audience was taking six AP classes, SHS senior David Murphy was the only student standing.
Loranger’s main goal for the event was to recognize academic achievement, noting, “These students are taking courses with a high level of rigor, so it’s really a celebration.” He also wanted to give parents and guardians a chance to come into SHS and interact with students and teachers.
After the ceremony, students scheduled to take the math AP mock exam proceeded to the SHS library, where they sat for an exam designed to provide practice and feedback before the College Board exams in May.
