It’s the end of October, and you know what that means–college application season is in full swing! The class of 2025 is feeling the senior stress more than ever, and with many seniors applying early to their top colleges, students are rushing to complete their applications before the popular November 1st deadline. While some deadlines are varied, most students are wrapping up their applications.
In a poll of students taking AP Literature, a senior English course, 12 students were asked about their plans for college applications. One student is already committed to college for sports, two students plan on applying early decision to college, eight plan on applying during the early action application cycles, and only one student plans on applying for regular decision for all schools.
Two other students have already committed to college as student-athletes, among them Willy Robinson, who is committed to Army West Point for Division I lacrosse, and Katie von Freymann, who committed to Colby College for field hockey. As a recruited athlete, von Freymann said she is relieved to be partially done with college applications. (Contrary to popular belief, student-athletes who are pre-committed to college sports programs still have to complete applications.) “I still have to do my regular essay and fill out their regular Common Application, but thankfully, Colby has no supplemental essays,” von Freymann said.
When asked about the number of seniors applying early to college, SHS guidance counselor Zoe Hassett said, “I’ve noticed more students applying early this year than ever before.” Hassett explained that the early decision and early action trend gained traction after COVID-19, with the amount of these applicants increasing each year.
