Whether or not to tip at a restaurants is a heavily debated and ultimately inconclusive debate. The standard tip amount is anywhere from 15%-20%. However, there are some people who tip solely based on the service. Tipping is technically supposed to be based on the service received, however, many people don’t understand that the reason behind tipping well is not solely based on service.
A standard hourly pay for a waiter or waitress is on average about $2.50. This of course is not including tips. They make less money because of the huge profits they can make in tips. If people aren’t giving a decent tip, however, the waitress or waiter make little money.
While people can criticize and judge servers based on their quality and amazing performance, it is not that simple. Many servers work at restaurants because they need money and/or can’t find another job. Junior Marisa Stewart works as a waitress and says that usually the tip percentage she gets is about 18-20% also adding that her hourly wage is only $2.85. To give a server a 10% tip because they didn’t deliver your food on a gold tray with white gloves is rude and selfish.
When a person goes out for a meal, he or she is being pampered in a sense. Someone takes their order, a chef prepares it, food is delivered to them and they don’t have to clean it up after themselves. Not to mention that servers frequently check up on their tables to make sure everything is okay. With these considerations, it is absolutely rude to tip scantily. To give more than a standard 15%-20% is fine if that’s what the person wants to do but to tip less is heartless considering servers make most of their money from tips.
If servers are having a bad day and they aren’t on their A game or aren’t as cheerful and peppy as a person would prefer, it doesn’t mean that person deserves a small tip. If something with your order is incorrect and the server is apologetic and rushes to fix it, then they still deserve a standard tip. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone has days when they just can’t seem to do anything the way they are supposed to.Whether you’re having a good day or bad day, tip well because one day it could be you.
