If you’ve ever gone shopping with your parents, grandparents or someone older than yourself, you know that every generation has a different idea of the latest fashion do’s and don’ts. However, one might ask, at what point does a fashion “do” become a fashion “don’t” and vice versa? Some fashion faux pas are, as you might notice, commonly practiced as a daily slump. While there are often strict rules in fashion, here are some ways to stick to them or break free.
Fanny packs- These have never ever been a fashion “do”. They were never featured on a runway model in Milano in the spring. The only thing that you accomplish with a fanny pack is looking like a 55 year old tourist who couldn’t bother to hold on to a more fashionable clutch or purse to hold their map and travel items.
Crocs-Admit it, a few years ago we were all wearing these bright colored, plastic, loafer like shoe. Unless you are gardening, please just don’t. These are a has been and not to be worn out of your backyard unless you are a child under the age of five..
White after Labor Day- Although controversial, this faux pas has definitely passed. If its May 20th and 75 degrees out, there is no problem for anyone to sport a pair of nice white shorts, “I think if it’s a nice enough day, and even though you’re technically not supposed to it’s totally fine” said junior Hannah Leeping. Despite the date restrictions, a pair of white pants isn’t against the rules later on in the winter season.
Too short pants- Are you wearing crops or normal length pants? Are you going out walking in three feet of water, requiring a pair of floods? Don’t let there be any question. The worst is when your pants come slightly about floor length, almost near your ankle but not high enough above your ankles to be a cropped pant. This makes for a pathetic look that you don’t want to associate yourself with. This look is also something that can be detrimental to your social life. As junior Molly Bogusz said, “Anytime you’re considering the short pants look, remember, there’s no chance at romance with short pants.”
Uggs and shorts- If it’s cold out, you’re probably going to wear uggs. If it’s warm out, most girls will be wearing shorts. However, by wearing this appalling combination of seasonal styles, you have surely committed a fashion “don’t”. In this case, a combination, of hot and cold seasonal styles, is a confusing look for everyone. If someone was to come upon you in a climate controlled situation, they should be able to tell something about the weather outside. Don’t let people be confused.
Don’t wear sparkle during the day- You’ve seen this trend enough to know that it is no longer a faux pas. Although you are probably not going to wear a full out sequined outfit with crazy sparkle eye shadow at 7am in the morning, a pair of rhinestone shoes or a simple sparkly shirt is acceptable for daytime hours. Just hold off on going all glitzy until after dark, for Scituate’s extreme nightlife scene.
As our society is becoming more modern, so is our sense of fashion. However, that doesn’t mean you can just let yourself go, and pretend you are trying to set a trend with a past fashion statement and a modern “don’t”.
