With two stubby, blond pigtails on the top of her head, Miley Cyrus was ready to take the VMA’s by storm. The stomach of a big, brown, hairy teddy bear opened up and Cyrus exited with her tongue hanging out of her mouth. Wearing a nude colored top and bottom and singing her single, “We Can’t Stop”, Miley exemplified her new persona on stage and people still cannot stop talking about her racy performance.
Cyrus started out as a child star on the show Hannah Montana, which aired from 2006 to 2011. Miley upheld her “good girl” personality until she decided to dye her hair blond and cut it short. This was when people started to question her actions. But everything Miley does has a reason and the way she portrays herself is admirable. Regarding her newly formed persona senior Emily Podurgiel said, “I love her music, hate her hair.”
By not having a childhood to act out on, Cyrus matured quickly as an adolescent pop star. She is seizing the opportunity as a famous 20 year old to make her mark on the world. Even though her public image has changed, her intentions are still the same and she wants to entertain the world. In the documentary “Miley: The Movement,” Cyrus says, “I’m the same human. I’ve got the same heart I had five years ago… It’s a growth, it’s a change.”
The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards was a pivotal moment in Miley’s career and signified a change in the amount of public and media attention she received. Shortly after her performance, people said that it was offensive and disgusting, but she was just expressing herself. In her documentary she said that she thinks it’s funny how people take her performance serious. She said, “You might as well make them talk for two weeks rather than two seconds.”
Cyrus’s new album “BANGERZ” was released on October 8th and reached number one on the iTunes album chart within the first ten minutes. Two singles- “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball”- were dropped before its release. Both were popular and reached the number one spot on the iTunes singles chart, but people continue to feel animosity towards her. Cyrus is making amazing music for people to enjoy and is being herself – something that she could not do before because of her childhood career.
Senior Meagan Hodges said, “Every Disney Channel Star goes down this path, this is not new. You do you, Miley. A song that is really a problem is Blurred Lines. Like O.K., it’s kind of weird that she’s naked on a wrecking ball, but honestly it’s not a huge issue and there are other things we can focus on.”
The documentary, “Miley: The Movement,” aired Oct. 2 and portrayed Cyrus’s transformation over the past decade. Her connection to her fans, ability to cope with negative opinions, and passion for music were obvious. All of her actions have a bigger and deeper meaning, and during the show she said, “I don’t apologize for anything. I’m always gonna do something different… This is all thought out in my mind. Every decision goes into a bigger plan… I was born to become who I am right now.”
Cyrus has proven to be one of the most talented and rational young women in the entertainment industry. She makes smart decisions to boost her career and ignores the negative attention she receives from people. Her perseverance and individuality are two of the reasons why she is both loved and hated – but the hate will soon die down and people will learn to love the new Miley Cyrus.
