Starting March 21st, Scituate High School’s mascot will come to life. SHS finally has a sailing team. With Scituate being a small town on the coast, and known as the Scituate Sailors why doesn’t the school have a sailing team? Seniors Kristi MacEachern, and Marisa Marshalka knew it was time Scituate had a sailing team. Starting the team was a long and extensive process, the first step to starting the team was meeting with Principal Mr. Wargo, athletic director Mr. Cash, and the Scituate Recreation Department. “We have had a lot of support in starting the team from the community and the school. Hopefully we will also be funded by SHORE,” said senior Marisa Marshalka. MacEachern, Marshalka and the team will be sailing out from the Maritime Center using the Recreation Department’s fleet.
The Scituate Sailing Team is hoping for smooth sailing with 15 students signing up, the crew is ready to take on the seas. Before they can actually touch the water fundraising is needed. The sailing team will be using the Scituate Recreation Department’s boats that are normally used during the summer. The fundraising will help refurbish the Scituate Recreation Department’s mercury fleet, the 420 fleet and a new chase boat. Recently, on March 2nd the sailing team hosted a night of music at the River Club Music Hall by Montana Skies and Jeanne Jolly. Students will also need to complete a swim test. For some students this will be there first time sailing, but others have been sailing for as long as possible. “We’re all really excited to finally have a sailing team at Scituate High School. We now have a chance to participate in a sport we really love.” Senior Kristi MacEachern said. This year the sailors will participate in a different type of racing, the team racing. Most students were used to fleet racing where each boats is trying to cross the finish line first, while team racing consists of teams facing off in three or five races.
Marshalka, and MacEachern have been sailing with the Scituate Recreation Department from a young age. With the help of new coaches DR Kwapis and Gregory Morse the team is set to sail. Now as seniors they’re excited to leave their mark. This is their last year and they are ready to step up as co-captains hoping to lead the Scituate Sailors to victory.
