With summer right around the corner, and bathing suit season quickly approaching, why spend hundreds of dollars on gym memberships and workout classes? Our town of Scituate provides the community with everything needed to get in shape without spending a dime.
As a town on the coast, Scituate is lucky enough to be surrounded by three popular beaches, attracting members of the community each summer. The beach is a great place to get fit. Don’t even bother with a car, Scituate High School’s sophomore Molly McCormack says her favorite way to work out in the summer is by “running down to Egypt Beach”. On a nice summer day, you can look down the beach to see it disguised in colorful umbrellas, and groups of people digging in the sand and frolicking in the water. Use this opportunity to play beach sports such as Frisbee, football, pickle, and whiffle ball. What better way is there to get a beachbody than by being at the beach soaking up the sun?
How about trying out the new fad, paddle boarding? If you are unfamiliar with this up and coming hobby, it looks as if someone is standing on water. Both kayaking and paddleboarding are awesome ways to work your core and arms, but the best part about them is the fact that you can get a great workout and beat the heat at the same time. If you know anyone with a paddle board or kayak, take the chance, and ask to borrow it for the day.
Scituate has many amazing views one can catch while walking or jogging around town. “One of the best places to run is around the lighthouse” according to junior Isabel Berton. Here you can peer over the harbor at all of the community’s boats and take in the fresh, salty air blowing off of the ocean.
With the clean air of the coast and the magnificent scenery, there is no better place for yoga. A yoga studio cannot beat the sand between your toes, and the warm breeze. Very few times during the year can you enjoy a workout and stay out of the gym. Use the nice weather of the summer to save up your money and take your workouts outside.
And for those of you who have four legged friends at home, don’t be afraid to let them enjoy all the outdoors have to offer with you. From the early morning hours up until 10:00 a.m., dogs are welcome to stroll the beaches. Then again from 6:00 p.m. on, dogs are free to run wild and swim. Don’t pass up this opportunity to take your pets for a walk and help both of you exercise without a cost.
Not only do the sandy attractions of the town supply the community with easy riches to get fit. Even in the summer, Scituate High School can be just as busy as it is during the school year. With its outdoor basketball courts, roller rink, tennis courts, track and turf field, you can always take a trip to the high school (although school may be the last place you want to visit) for ways to get in shape.
The summer may be the greatest time to enjoy the outdoors, get in shape, and keep your pockets full. Don’t take what Scituate has to offer for granted and use the town to show off your perfect beach bod this season.
