This past Friday, Scituate’s football team played their first game of the season against Norton High School. Although they faced a heartbreaking 28-27 loss, the team looks to be doing more than just pulling their own weight with the amount of seniors lost last year.
With a total loss of seventeen seniors last year, varsity has been forced to work hard in order to make up for the loss.
When asked how prepared they felt for this season, Senior captain Dawayne Kirton said, “we’ve been training hard, so I feel prepared for our games.”
The team has been practicing since the end of july and continues to work on the skills needed to have a winning season. “ We’ve been working all preseason on perfecting offense and defense and hope for the best this season,“ said senior captain Tim Churchill.
Scituate put a total of four impressive touchdowns in the season opener. Touchdowns were scored by senior running back and cornerback Dawayne Kirton, Junior quarterback Christian Brady, and Sophomore wide receiver Devin Gantt. The varsity team also welcomed freshman Jaylen Cromwell this year. Cromwell made his first appearance in the season opener, and an impressive one at that.
In addition to a well played game, the team also attracted a very impressive crowd. Students and parents alike filled the stands, along with many of the new and returning teachers. ” With all the close away games, we hope to attract a bigger crowd this year” said Churchill.
Scituate certainly lucked out this season with all the local away games, the furthest being North Quincy. Scituate will see three away games this season, including North Quincy, Whitman-Hanson, and Pembroke.
The team continues to work on their offense and defense, and hope to continue bringing in an impressive crowd.
