Sam Fennelly is not only a star basketball player for Scituate High School, but he also takes part in America’s favorite past time, baseball. Fennelly may appear shy at first, but those who know him well are certain he is a bright, lighthearted, and enthusiastic student. With his reserved attitude and constant positive sentiment, Fennelly is an ideal role model for athletes and students of all ages.
Since Fennelly was seven years old, he has been fascinated by the sport of baseball. He recalls watching the Boston Red Sox journey through nine playoff appearances in the 18 seasons of his life, with an astounding three World Series victories in the ’04, ’07, and ’13 seasons. Fennelly worked on his fielding skills and hand-eye coordination to improve his hitting during his youth.
He went on to win the Sandwich Tournament in sixth grade. Stemming from his rigorous workout schedule and commitment to the game, Fennelly continued to carry his skills into SHS’s baseball program.
Combined with his athletic abilities, Fennelly is also a decorated academic scholar: he is an honor roll student and holds many distinguished achievements around the school.
“Sam is the type of person who doesn’t need to be vocal to be a leader. His actions speak louder than words,” senior co-captain Scott Radding says. Radding emphasized it’s important to realize that although he is not the verbal leader, his articulate approach to leading the team by example is something to be commended. So far the team has faced a tough season, with their record sitting at (0-1). However, Fennelly remains optimistic about the remaining games, stating, “I think we have the capability to do special things this year with the skill, experience, and chemistry to win.” After playing the game nearly a decade, Fennelly reflects on his career, both on and off the field.
“I’ve been playing with some of my teammates my whole life, and I can’t wait to take the field with them for the rest of my senior season,” says Fennelly. After this season concludes and the Class of 2015 graduates, he will be taking his sound academic mind to the University of Michigan Ann Arbor as a Wolverine. With his athletic career at SHS coming to a finish, Fennelly is ecstatic about the idea of attending his top-choice college. It is clear Fennelly’s focused and encouraging mindset will bring him success in his future.
