Instead of staring at strange clouds in the sky, rookie of the month Sam Doughty listens to them — well, he listens to the song Strange Clouds, by B.O.B, to pump him up before games.

At the ripe age of six or seven-years-old, Doughty was padded up and ready to take on his first tackle. Growing up with a dad and an older brother who both played football, Sam had a bit of an advantage.

Working on technique and throwing the football around with the both of them has played an important role in Doughty’s football career. Doughty also plays the same position as his father: right tackle on the offensive line.

When asked who motivated him to do so well, Doughty said, “My dad and my brother, because they both were really good at football.”

Doughty, who is number 70 on the football team, was surprised when he found out he would be starting as a freshman on varsity. When asked if he was a little nervous, he honestly replied with a yes, and stated that he usually doesn’t eat anything on Fridays before or after the game due to those same nerves.

Before it all started, Doughty was anxious, but he knew he would be fine. He said that he “only knew one or two people on the team, not many” before the season started. Now, four games in, Doughty revealed that he now has some really close friends with whom he enjoys practicing.

Doughty also mentioned that he always wished he was good at hockey, saying he “never got around to playing hockey or learning how to skate.”

As Rookie of the Month, freshman Sam Doughty has made a lasting impression on the coaches and the fans of Scituate’s varsity football team. Look out for number 70 on the field, because he may go from Rookie of the Month to Athlete of the Month in a matter of time.
