Scituate High School has welcomed a new wrestling coach, Sean Petrosino, or “Coach Petro” for short. This year, Petro has big plans for Scituate wrestling, and with the recent Kevin J. Curtis tournament at SHS, the team was finally able to show off their progress from last season. With Scituate’s recent debut against Nauset with a 60-12 win, the team is excited for the season’s future.
Already showing major improvements from last year, the team is determined to keep winning. The team won a close win in their first Patriot League match against Pembroke. The team is improving, and Petrosino plans to keep supporting students to refine their skills on the mat.
Senior team captains David Murphy and Paul Cheverie have been exceptional leaders and continue to make personal bests. During the Marshfield holiday tournament, Cheverie won the 175-pound weight class tournament. The junior varsity team had three 1st place winners: sophomores Grayson Loeffel, Albert (Aj) Reimels, and Brady Standridge all took first place. In a more recent Weymouth tournament, Murphy took first place for the 150-pound weight class–winning in the finals after triple-overtime.
Petro has been successfully coaching wrestling and football for 19 years. The most important values he espouses include being a hard worker and a good person inside and outside of school. He commented that he wants to make sure his athletes come out of the season tougher while also enjoying their time on the mat and as a team: “Once you get through wrestling, everything else gets a little bit easier.”
