On Tuesday, October 22nd, after a hard-fought match, the SHS boys’ junior varsity soccer team defeated Hanover’s junior varsity team on Scituate home turf with a 4-0 score, a vital game in their remarkable comeback from the early season losing streak. Some of the highlights from the game were goals from both freshman Phineus (Finn) Chase and junior Coby Alden-Danforth as well as close attempts on goal from sophomores Luke Wolf and Henry Heard. Throughout the entire game, the SHS team put up a hard fight to keep the aggression on Hanover. The SHS team showed great team chemistry, both on and off the field, with friendly conversation and banter on the bench as well as good sportsmanship and teamwork on the turf.
SHS mathematics teacher Jamie Forde is the coach of the team. Forde believes the goal of the JV program is to challenge players to do the best that they can and put in their full effort for every game. His job is to take players at one level and guide them to the next step: the varsity team.
The team began the season with a rough record of 1-7, but before the Hanover game, they were sitting at a record of 7-9. Now, after winning the October 22nd game as well as a separate away game against North Quincy, the team has raised its record even more. They’ve finished their season with an even record of 9-9. Aside from a couple of injuries, this season has gone by without complications.
Coach Forde stated, “If you’re better tomorrow than you were today, and you’re better than you were yesterday, then you’re improving, and that’s the whole goal of the JV program.” The team’s comeback from their early 1-7 record to their current 9-9 record demonstrates how the players came together and grew as a team since the beginning of the season.
When SHS sophomores Jason Corcione and Luke Hanley were asked who they thought would make varsity next year, they named juniors Alden-Danforth, Aiden Goncalves, and Joe Gibson, who is currently out of the game due to a broken toe. They also named Keiran Ouellette, Nelson Murray, and Luke Hanley, all from the Class of 27. Hanley said Murray was a great, aggressive player, and Ouellette stands out with his valuable technical skills.
Forde added, “Regardless of the wins and losses, 99% of the time they come out and give 100% effort. They’re not always on all of the time—nobody is—but they really do try to be always on 100% of the time and give it their best effort.”
