The senior girls claimed victory with a score of 21-7 against the juniors at the Powder Puff football game Nov. 17 on the turf. With some bright tights, war paint and a few days’ practice both teams gave their best effort to the game. The senior girls were led by quarterback Alanna Woodford, Jenn Fassnacht and Aubrey Webber. Junior quarterbacks Molly Peters and Katy McMahon led the junior squad, who were well matched for the opposition. The first quarter was rife with tension. Webber scored the seniors’ first touchdown but junior Kate Lemire soon scored to keep an even pace. Considering the lack of flags in a game meant as non-tackle flag football, the action was relatively calm. “Even though we didn’t have flags this year, last year’s game was a lot more violent and a lot of girls got hurt,” said senior Rachel Stanley. While the first half of the game seemed evenly matched, the seniors dominated the second half. Senior quarterback Woodford handled the ball well and continued to rely on Fassnacht and Webber to bring it down the field. Webber and Woodford scored the final two touchdowns for the seniors, and focused on protecting their 21-7 lead. By the last five minutes of the second half, senior victory was in sight, but the juniors valiantly tried to keep going. Lemire and McMahon put in admirable offensive work throughout the game. At the final buzzer, the crowd went wild for the class of 2011. After a severe beating in last year’s powder puff game, the senior girls were determined to win their final year. The juniors accepted defeat with smiles in the hopes of winning glory for themselves next year. The game will surely be one of the highlights of the year. Junior and senior varsity football players managed each team and Ms. Grindle, Mr. Mills and Ms. Bird were the referees of the night. Though forecasts had predicted showers, the stands were crowded with anticipating spectators and the night was fairly warm. Proceeds from food and tickets went to Student Council.
