The 63rd annual Emmy’s were this past Sunday filled with some great, and not so great attire walking the red carpet, funny dialogue, and some shocking wins. Host, Jane Lynch was excellent and the audience was incredibly receptive, laughing at her welcoming, yet biting wit throughout the ceremony.
One of ABC’s hottest shows, Modern Family, walked home with a number of Emmy Awards. The show won Best Comedy Series, Best Directing in a Comedy Series, Comedy Series Writing, and actors Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen won best supporting actor and actress, respectively, for their roles in the show.
”I totally think that they deserved to win so many Emmy’s because, the writing is perfect,” said junior Emma Freeman. There were also some wins that shocked viewers. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were both rumored to win Best Actress in a comedy series, but the award went to Melissa McCarthy from CBS’ comedy Mike and Molly.
Actors Steve Carell and Alec Baldwin from NBC’s The Office and 30 Rock, respectively, were fan favorites to claim the title of Best Actor in a Comedy Series, but when Charlie Sheen took the stage with a surprise appearance he named the winner; CBS’ Big Bang Theory actor Jim Parsons, making his second win. Shocked about the outcome, Carell’s co-star, Rainn Wilson, tweeted, “The world of TV should be ashamed of itself that Steve Carell never won an Emmy for Michael Gary Scott.” Despite the shocks of the night, it was a great way to start off the new fall season.
Following comedy, were the Drama Awards. Kyle Chandler from Friday Night Lights and Julianna Margulies from The Good Wife, walked away with an Emmy as Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series. Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones, and Margo Martindale from Justified were awarded with Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Drama Series. The Best Drama Series, went to the cast of Mad Men, which was not a shock to the audience, its 4th consecutive win.
The Emmy’s are not the only events being hyped up. A bunch of new shows will be hitting the weekday night’s line-up. Shows include, The New Girl on FOX, a remake of Charlie’s Angels with Minka Kelly on ABC, and Up All Night with Christina Applegate and Will Arnett. If you enjoy comedy with a twist, these three anticipated shows may be the one for you to watch. TV shows, have had trouble finding their niche in the past, and can lead to shows being canceled. Luckily, there are some shows that are coming back from good starts, The Voice, Hawaii 5.0, and Parks and Recreations, and Two and a Half Men, with new co-star Ashton Kutcher.
Senior Stephanie Robinson said, “I’m going to watch Two and a Half Men, to see how it turns out.”Hopefully a few of this year’s highly anticipated new shows will find their voice and a welcoming audience and we’ll see them celebrating at the Emmy awards next year.
