It’s Friday night, the end of a long school week. The weekend is finally here. What better way to kick off the weekend than by going to the football game to support your school? Sure, the football games are great fun to socialize with fellow classmates and a great way to show school spirit, but what about the other sports?
While fans crowd the bleachers for the games, the hype overshadows soccer, field hockey, golf and cross-country teams. It’s not that I don’t enjoy going to the football games, I just think that it is wrong that other sports are under appreciated compared to football.
Senior varsity soccer player Mike Leonard said, “I feel like the football team gets better priorities, like game times, although the soccer team has good fan support the way we are treated is unfair and should be changed.” For example the football games are scheduled on Fridays or weekends while the soccer team gets there games on the weekdays.
Senior golfer Jack O’Donoghue said that although golf is not seen as popular then football, he understands why people would rather go to a football game. However he believes that all teams should get equal publicity at SHS in terms of morning announcements and posters around the school.
Cross-country runner and junior Alece Demetriades said, “People don’t appreciate cross country because students don’t believe running is as difficult as football, when in fact it is just as challenging as other sports.”
The varsity field hockey team does not appreciate football’s glory as well as other sports. Senior Rebecca Mullin believes that all sports should be equal and football should be no exception. When senior Devon Kelley was asked whether she believed football was over appreciated at school she said, “I believe field hockey is only appreciated by people over the age of 55. LOL!”
“Field hockey is the least appreciated sport at this school, it is ridiculous,” junior Melissa Harris said. “We are ranked #1 and the turf is called the football field; why not the all-purpose field?”
I have no issue with football, but I disagree when people say football is the “best” sport. Yes, I enjoy watching football, but why are the other sports ignored in the fall? Cross country and golf work hard all year and are not appreciated. Field Hockey is # 1 in their league and yet they get no fan support. Soccer is one of the most electrifying sports in the world and they are under appreciated by the football team and kicked to poor practice fields. All sports need equal appreciation from teachers, students and the whole community. Whether it is a touchdown, goal, first place finish or a hole in one everyone should go support the sailors.
