Scituate High School offers a variety of opportunities ranging from Debate Club to Varsity football. But there is one area that has been underrepresented throughout the years: intramural clubs. For the first time, intramural volleyball was offered at the high school, headed by faculty member Mrs. Loughnane.
Although this new intramural sport was not as competitive or serious as an MIAA sport, it is a step in the right direction. Mrs. Loughnane pointed out the benefits of it being an intramural sport: “it’s great getting kids involved in a less competitive environment and having them still learn skills.” It also served as a great way for underclassmen to get involved as Mrs. Loughnane was very impressed with “the underclassmen turnout” for volleyball this past season.
Many are hoping that volleyball will start a new trend for more intramurals to emerge on the scene at SHS. John Pinkham, a junior at SHS, helped to organize a club to start more intramurals. Unfortunately it turned out to be “more hype than anything,” as many students supported the group on Facebook, but few actually showed up to the meetings. Regardless, Pinkham still believes that more intramurals should be offered to students at SHS despite the seemingly failed attempt at starting a movement with the Intramurals Club.
