Rap isn’t the most common music genre in the quiet town Scituate, however Amphibious Underground is changing the face of student bands by being one of the few rap groups in town. Brandon Hagen of No Nada fame and fellow junior John Pinkham wanted to start a rap group after seeing Dantos, a popular school rap group of 2010, perform at last year’s Coffee House. With Jack Kahrs joining the group in their first actual session, Amphibious Underground was officially formed.
“We rap about what people want to hear. What people feel: pretty girls, Butterfingers (the candy bar), latex gloves, and shampoo,” said Pinkham. The group’s raps are quite humorous and the number one track off of their mix tape, “Grandmas” shows their style.
Most of the group’s music comes from samples of Richard Arnold’s beats and Hagen’s guitar. Looking to the future Amphibious Underground is continuing work on their mix tape with no definite release. “We want to start a movement,” Hagen jokes, “rap should be an art at Scituate, not a joke.” Sure, it is not clear where Amphibious Underground will go in the next year, but for the time being they’re here to bring the hip hop game to the halls of SHS.
