There’s no doubt that the girl’s hockey team will miss one of their best players next year: senior Katy McMahon. Skating since the age of three and playing hockey since age six, McMahon definitely has experience with the game and has shown her skills as a four-year varsity player.
Over the past few years, McMahon has helped the relatively new team to grow and improve, especially as a captain her junior year and she will continue to do so this year alongside her co-captain, Maggie Travers. Travers described her teammate as “very competitive and aggressive and willing to work as hard as she can to win.” According to Travers, McMahon loves to joke around and have a good time and encourages others to do the same, but she turns serious once put in a game situation and show her true dedication to the game.
On the ice, McMahon proves to be one of the most versatile players, playing all positions, including goalie. “Sometimes I miss playing a position,” said McMahon, “I’ll miss goalie, so then I’ll play it.” McMahon is always willing to play where she’s needed, demonstrating her various skills.
Ms. Donnelly, the girl’s hockey coach, has coached McMahon since 7th grade and said “she has matured incredibly.” Donnelly described McMahon as one of the strongest leaders, on and off the ice. “As a player, she’s extremely hardworking and never quits,” Donnelly said.
In addition to her time on the hockey team, McMahon has been a strong member of both the varsity soccer and spring track teams for the past four years. She has shown her true dedication as an athlete with the accomplishment of being one of the only girls to play three varsity sports all four years. Her love for sports doesn’t end with the school year; McMahon also enjoys surfing during the summer.
With the winter season fast approaching, McMahon has strong hopes for her last hockey season at Scituate High. She hopes to win a larger portion of games compared to past years and for the team to overall be more consistent.
But along with the excitement of a new season, comes the sadness of McMahon’s last. When asked what she will miss most about SHS hockey, McMahon said “everything in general” because she is unsure of whether or not she will continue playing in college.
As a senior, McMahon juggles the stress of college applications and work for classes in addition to her commitment to sports. She challenges herself academically, taking a total of four AP classes. With college not far away, McMahon does not know where she wants to go yet, but she does know that she wants to play club soccer or hockey in college. “I definitely want to stay active in intramurals,” she said.
Hockey season is in full swing and the girls are working hard to continue their constant improvements to their record and team. You can be sure to find McMahon on the ice, playing any position, so be sure to bundle up and come support the girls’ hockey team.
