After weeks of shopping for the perfect gifts, many teens are stuck with empty wallets after the holidays. Without any money, many don’t know what to do with their winter break since shopping or traveling and other typical weekend activities may be outside the budget, but there are many activities available at little cost.
A scavenger hunt is a great way to have fun with friends and without spending a lot of money. There are many hunts available online or on the iPhone; the Scavenger Hunt Lite app is free and lets people compete against friends in hilarious tasks. All you need for this activity is a camera and you’re ready to go. “Scavenger hunts are a great because you don’t have to spend a lot of money and it’s a different way to hang out with your friends. Whether its around Scituate or Boston, a scavenger hunt will not be very expensive and it is something different to do with friends over vacation.
Faneuil Hall is a popular location for most teens heading to Boston, but equally close to Scituate is Harvard Square. Even if you are not interested in shopping at the many stores, Harvard Square has over 300 registered street performers that are both exciting and free to enjoy. Restaurants also fill Harvard Square with cuisines ranging from Mexican to Middle Eastern. “Harvard Square a really great place to walk around with your friends in Boston.” said Freshman Kate MacCune. Harvard Square is fun for people of all ages, but teens will especially enjoy this cheap Boston attraction.
Winter break is the perfect time to catch up on the latest films at a cheap price. Both Patriot Cinemas in Hanover and Hingham and South Shore Cinemas in Scituate offer Super Tuesday deals with any movie only $5. This is much more reasonable compared to the typical $9 for general admission. If you bring your own snacks from home, a night at the movies can be a lot of fun at a low price.
Ice skating is a classic winter activity and for only $5 you and your friends can spend a day at Frog Pond in Boston. Skates are available for rent or you can bring your own for hours of enjoyment. Frog Pond is open most days from 10 am to 9 pm and the $5 price includes the whole day. Food is also available for purchase including hot coffee, specialty seasonal items, and fresh, made to order Belgian Waffles. Junior Gabby Lopez said, “Frog Pond is so much fun. If you’re still stumped, there are plenty of things you can do at home this winter break. School nurse Ms. Bernard said, “There’s always something to do at home.” Whether you’re watching TV, listening to music, or baking cookies, you can save money by hanging out at home with your friends.
There are tons of things to do over winter vacation without emptying your wallet. Whether you head to Boston or stay in Scituate, being broke doesn’t mean you have to be bored.
