As a longtime fan of basketball, in recent years the NBA has become less entertaining as superstar players begin to come together making “dream teams” the best example being the Miami Heat. The lockout has entailed multiple cancellations, the first being training camps for the teams to practice. Then, the season through October, November, and most of December was cancelled. Through most of this time, it seemed that there was no definite solution. I was all for these cancellations because I just wasn’t interested in it coming back. As for the players, people have felt no sympathy for them, but for all of the people that were behind the scenes for the teams. The trainers, janitors, concession workers of the teams were all jobless.
However, Thanksgiving weekend changed everything: a tentative settlement was agreed to and just a week later an official agreement was made. A shorter NBA season will begin on Christmas day Dec. 25, and finish in June. As for the players demand for increase in pay, they will receive a .2% rise in revenue shares.
So, what does this mean for the future of the NBA? Well, for starters it shows how much money has become a factor in professional basketball and the league’s popularity has dropped over the past few years. Also this will show how long the regular season is and hopefully in the future they will shorten the season to fewer than 82 games. Now that the season is starting, I am excited for it to start and can’t wait for Christmas in New York as our Boston Celtics will take on the New York Knicks.
