Boys Hockey- The boys hockey team kicked off its season Dec. 10. A large group of seniors is leading the team and they’re hoping to have a season as successful as 2010, when their phenomenal record led them to the Garden in the state semifinals. With a challenging schedule ahead of them, “I think we’ll be in the middle of the pack, over .500,” senior Johnny Callanan said.
Cheerleading- The winter cheerleading squad is coached by Michelle Hayes and performs at every home boys basketball game. Senior captain Erin Duffey says the team will consist of about twenty students and hopes the team will be “better than ever.”
Girls Hockey- The SHS girls hockey program lost three seniors last year, but the team is growing every year year. With around ten seniors this year, they hope to have a successful season. Their first meet was Dec.10th in Weymouth at Milton Academy.
Girls Basketball- With a record of 21-4 last year and the loss of only one senior, Scituate’s girls basketball team is expected to have another fantastic season in 2012. Coach Brian Buckley recently received the Division II South Coach of the Year Award from the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association, and the team is looking forward to seeing upcoming talent from the JV team. “We expect to sail through the regular season. We’re playing a lot of difficult scrimmages so that should help us prepare for the playoffs. We want to go back to UMass,” senior captain Megan Otto said.
Ski Team- The SHS Ski Team will start its season after the winter’s first snowfall. Skiing is an individual sport, but the team is getting bigger every year. The team practices at Blue Hills and races at Ragged Mountain on Saturday mornings. Racing is optional, so anyone can join in and practice with the team during the week. Senior captain Micala Moore has high hopes for the season, saying, “Our team’s definitely not the best, but we definitely have the most fun.” Currently the team is looking for a coach; anyone interested should contact Mr. Cash.
Swim Team- The swim team started its season on Dec. 20th with a meet against Pembroke. Formerly combined with Cohasset as the Sci-Cohs, the Scituate team still practices with their previous teammates and competes separately at the same meets. The girls team lost only one meet last year and overall the runners have high hopes for the season. Senior captain Sarah Adams said the team’s goal is “to try to be undefeated. I hope that everybody gives their best effort.”
Wrestling- The SHS wrestling team kicked off its season on Saturday December 9th in a tournament at Oliver Ames.
