As winter approaches, many high school students can’t wait for it to be over and for summer to arrive, but for senior Micala Moore, winter means the arrival of ski season. Having been a member of the team since freshman year, Moore has had a major impact on ski team and is one of the team’s top racers.
Moore instantly fell in love with skiing at the age of three and has spent many winters on the mountains. “One thing I’ll miss about ski team is being able to ski three times a week. If I wasn’t on the team I probably wouldn’t have as many opportunities to ski,” said Moore.
Early this season, Moore had the best race of her high school career, placing 7th. Coach McEachern said, “She is a great skier, always in the top 20 in our league.” During her junior season, she was 18th overall in the league, only three away qualifying for states, but a tough fall kept her from making the cut in her last race of the year.
Skiing is definitely one of the highlights of Moore’s school year. “My favorite part about ski team is being with all the people. It’s a fun group.” Even on the nights she doesn’t get home from the mountain until late, Moore still loves being a part of the team. Even though she does not plan on racing competitively in college, Moore plans on continuing to ski for fun in her spare time.
As captain, Moore has been a role model for all members of ski team. Junior Hancie Stokes said, “Micala is really determined. She always sets a goal for herself. Her big one for this year is to make it to All-States and I know she can do it.”
Moore helps motivate all members of the ski team, whether they are a freshman or a fellow senior. “Micala never complains and is always willing to help others. She has served as a model of consistency for what a student athlete should be in any sport and I have truly enjoyed my time working with her,” said Coach McEachern.
Outside of ski team, Moore has been a valued member of the Scituate High School community. An avid member of Student Council, as well as a field hockey captain, Moore has spread her leadership abilities beyond the ski team. She has also worked at Camp Burgess and Hayward as a junior counselor. One thing Moore will never forget about her time at SHS was the Spanish Exchange her junior year. She plans on studying nursing in college, but she doesn’t know where she wants to go.
Although ski team is sometimes hidden by the excitement of basketball or hockey, athletes like Micala Moore are working hard all winter to make it to the post season or improve in the next race. With Moore’s dedication to skiing, the rest of the competition should look out as she will not stop until she has achieved her goals.
