Devon Kelley may be the most diverse athlete at Scituate High School. Since her freshman year, Kelley has participated in five different sports: soccer, basketball, field hockey, ski team and softball.
Though she participates in many athletic programs, her main focus in the spring is certainly softball. She has played softball her entire career at SHS and was captain both junior and senior years. A decorated player, Devon had two home runs and was named both a Patriot League and Patriot Ledger All-Star in 2011, allowing her to play in a South Shore All-Star game and get her picture in the paper. Surprisingly, Kelley had never played softball before tryouts freshman year.
At age six, Devon picked up a bat for the first time and fell in love… with baseball. Simply because her dad was a coach and her brother and friends played, Devon decided to enter the world of Little League. As her father fondly recalls, in sixth grade, Devon was the first girl to hit a baseball out of the park at Scituate’s Roach Field.
“I’ve been on so many teams with Devon since elementary school,” said co-captain and friend Brenda Keys. “She is so hardworking and dedicated to every sport she plays. She is a true athlete and team player, always giving her all and encouraging the team to play together and to their fullest potential.” Fellow co-captain Caroline Keefe notes that “Devon has the special ability to be a great player, but also make it fun.”
Despite requests to play college softball, Devon has decided to focus on her studies freshman year as she aspires to become an international teacher. Kelley has had a few years of teaching experience already as a ski and snowboard instructor at New Hampshire’s Bretton Woods Ski Lodge during the winter months. She is an accomplished competitive freestyle snowboarder and hits the slopes every weekend there’s snow on the ground.
When she’s not busy with her AAU club softball team Katman, Kelley enjoys playing the piano and drums, speaking Spanish and customizing fro-yo at Red Mango.
Kelley is looking forward to the upcoming softball season, and with about 15 freshman joining the squad, she anticipates a lot of new talent. “We have a big fan group,” Devon adds “and they will be tailgating at the games this year.” So swing by Central Field this spring, enjoy a hot dog and watch Devon hit a few home runs for the Scituate girl’s softball team.
