As this school year comes to an end, we begin to count down the days until we will be out of the classroom and on to the beach. But the end of every school year means final projects, final exams, and a lot of stress. Especially this year, with the extra two weeks added to the end of the year due to the multiple snow days, students find it harder and harder to concentrate in school as the year comes to a close.
For many students, it’s hard to stay focused in the hot classrooms this time of year, and it’s even harder to stay motivated knowing how long the school year seems to endlessly drag on. As the temperature rises, it seems that the lack of motivation rises as well. And the summer heat definitely plays a role in the, as the “summer fever” distracts us from our schoolwork.
As we all know by now, the official last day of school is June 27th. This is practically an extra two weeks from June 17th, the last day of school last year. In this last month of June, the temperature continues to rise, hitting 90 degrees a few times already. For many students, it’s hard to stay motivated in this summer heat.
With a little over 2 weeks of school left, summer is close enough to start getting excited for the fun that lies ahead. However, these last two weeks are crunch time for teachers. In the last month of school, schoolwork and projects do not slow down. If anything, projects are piled on even more in the last few weeks. Teachers are not slowing down the work, and with final exams to study for on top of these projects, it can be very overwhelming.
Junior Meghan James said, “When it’s hot out, you are physically tired, and when you are trying to do school work, it’s really hard to focus and stay motivated because you’re trying to stay cool”. In the past few weeks, classrooms have seen temperatures up to 88 degrees, and this heat definitely contributes to the lack of motivation that students feel.
Junior Victoria Johnson said, “the heat makes me tired, and when I’m tired, I don’t want to do any work. When the classrooms are so hot, it’s hard for me to stay on task and stay focused.” With temperatures in the school almost as hot as the temperatures outside, it’s hard to beat the heat in the month of June.
The bad news about it is, there is really no solution. With most rooms having no air conditioning, students are studying in a hot, uncomfortable environment. The dozens of fans located throughout the school can help a little bit, but in the long run, the school will still be fairly uncomfortable. It’s best to try and stick it out in these last few weeks. Don’t let the heat get to you, and stay motivated both in and out of the classroom. If you let your grades drop now, there will be no way to get them back up. Try to stay as cool and as focused as possible, and summer will come before you know it.
