In boys’ hockey, the Scituate Sailors are taking on a familiar rival in Hanover this Saturday, January 6th at 5:10pm at Hobomock Arena in Pembroke. The Hanover games are always entertaining, as last year the Sailors had three tilts against Hanover: two league games and one Gould Tournament game. The two teams are looking for a Fisher Division Title for their side of the Patriot League this season. The Sailors aim to take the top spot in this division for the fourth year in a row, which has never happened in the league, while the Hawks of Hanover look to return to the top position.
The season-long matchups of Scituate and Hanover last year were never short of a show. In their first game, the Sailors and Hawks battled hard in a three-to-three draw, filled with many penalties. Scituate tallied up a large number of penalty minutes, as well as three game misconducts. The Sailors got the best of the Hawks in their next competition, getting their way in a 5-2 win where they controlled play. The final competition between the teams was considered their best: a final in the Gould Cup over February break. This battle took overtime to decide a winner, finishing with a Dan Brown (2023 SHS grad) goal. This duel was huge for the Sailors, sending them into the playoffs with fervor.
The game on Saturday, January 6th, is a must-win for the Sailors as they are trying to make their way to the top of the league. With a host of new players stepping up this year for SHS, it will test every player up and down the roster.
Excited to see some “good, aggressive hockey,” Sailor Super Fan English teacher Jennifer Curtis is looking forward to Saturday’s game. As a resident of Hanover, Curtis is in a difficult position regarding which team to support. Nevertheless, she is willing to sport her blue and white: “I am more biased, and I want to see my students win–being from Hanover is great, as I do know a couple of the players, but I do feel more of a connection to the Scituate team.” Curtis said she particularly enjoys seeing students “flip a switch” and “level” someone into the boards.
This game is highly anticipated for the players, students, and teachers. The environment at Hobomock Ice Arena is always loud for Scituate and Hanover, so let’s hope the Sailors can anchor down the Hawks and come away with the victory.
