The Scituate girls’ hockey team was put to the test this year. Combining with neighboring towns Norwell and Abington for the first time in Scituate girls’ hockey program history to bolster a short roster based on the departure of last year’s senior players. For this year’s season, anticipation rose as the athletes entered a new team dynamic, joining forces with the recently combined Abington and Norwell teams.
Despite a somewhat uncertain start, the team defied expectations by clinching a playoff spot in their inaugural season as a tri-town unit.
Players Kathryn Mclean, class of 2026, and goalie Caroline Ellis, class of 2025, both noticed beneficial changes in the team with the new switch that ended in this outcome. When asked what differences she noticed between the two seasons, Mclean responded, “The overall environment of the team was very different. The team overall was a lot more competitive, and we really had the strive to win more.”
After her third year playing, Ellis highlighted the change in team dynamic before and after the combining of teams, saying, “As Scituate, we didn’t have systems, we were kind of just playing everybody to play, but with NSA, we were more of a team, more focused on making something out of our name.” Both girls acknowledged that despite a natural town-to-town competitiveness, they easily bonded on and off the ice, helping to lead them closer to a win.
The future of the 2024-25 season looks promising. According to McLean, “I’m personally excited to see what next season has to bring for our team, and we hope to go further as we continue getting closer.”
