For Scituate High School’s field hockey program, leadership on and off the field has been shaped by three standout captains: Katie von Freymann, Lyla Devine, and Evie Chestna. Each brings a unique approach and dedication to their role, creating a powerhouse team. With years of experience and passion for the game, these captains are the driving force behind this year’s success.
Katie von Freymann is a four-year varsity field hockey player who has played since 5th grade. She started with the club team True Grit and has followed in her older sister Ava’s footsteps ever since. As a leader, von Freymann models unwavering determination. She knew she wanted to play in college, which significantly contributed to her motivation. According to von Freymann, refraining from focusing on the referees’ calls is important. Although the calls can dictate the game, it’s best to keep working toward the next play. von Freymann’s favorite moment as captain was the win over Notre Dame Academy, with a score of 2-1. She said this showed other teams “how capable we are.”
Senior Lyla Devine, a three-year varsity player, has played field hockey since fifth grade. Like von Freymann, Devine played for True Grit, where she met Coach Boyle. Devine said Boyle would say, “You may not be the best player, but you can be the one who works the hardest.” This quote stuck with her and motivated her to work as hard as possible in every game or practice. As a captain, Devine is considered thoughtful, caring, and reasonable. Using these traits as her guide, Devine enjoys promoting team unity: “We win as a team, and we lose as a team,” she said. Devine’s goal for the team is to make it to the tournament and leave everything on the field. Devine said her favorite moment as a captain had been the game against Cohasset, stating, “We played like it was our last.” Devine expressed her pride in how the team played: “We showed everyone how good we are.”
Evie Chestna, a three-year varsity field hockey captain, has played since 6th grade. Starting with a club team in Holliston, MA, Chestna said a friend’s older sister inspired her to keep working. Chestna loves field hockey because of “the energy during the game and being a part of something bigger.” She added, “Even with disagreement on the field, we all rally behind each other and always have each other’s back.” Chestna believes she was voted captain due to her friendliness and attention to detail on and off the field. She encourages her teammates during games by saying, “Good job–it is fine. You will get it next time.” When asked what sets Scituate apart from other teams, she commented, “I see other teams yelling at each other during games, and we do not talk to each other like that.” To Chestna, being a captain means supporting your team.
As the team continues to dominate, von Freymann, Devine, and Chestna will set the tone for Scituate’s field hockey program, inspiring each player to give their all and showcasing the power of teamwork.
